The Art of Simple Band Weaving
by Susan J. Foulkes
A superb book! Susan Foulkes is a gifted band weaver and teacher who has published several books on band weaving, most of them focused on pick-up designs. This is my favorite: a book solely dedicated to plain-weave designs. The 150 design drafts accompanied by color photos of woven examples are reason enough to have this book on your shelf. Her clear instructions and helpful tips make it indispensable. Foulkes covers everything you need to know about how to weave a narrow band, including reading patterns, winding a warp, and weaving on five different looms—backstrap with rigid heddle, inkle loom, rigid heddle loom, table loom, and Swedish band loom.
Foulkes donates her book profits to St Margaret’s Centre in Durham. The main aim of the centre is to improve the health and wellbeing of the community of County Durham by providing a safe, therapeutic environment for people to regain their confidence, motivation and self-esteem while learning new skills and meeting new friends.
